Althogh some people can find the crematorium a creepy place to go, the one in Baumschulenweg is contemporary a strong and symbolic architecture, designed by the Berlin architects and urban planners Axel Schultes and Charlotte Frank.
The actual one is in the same area of the old one, built during the Prussian time around 1911, a neoclassical building with a domed central building, damaged and rebuilt after the WWII.
The DDR also used the system to clandestine cremation of deaths of the Berlin Wall or other persons whose circumstances of death should be concealed.
The new one, built in 1999, was at this time the most modern cremation facility in Europe.
