The building is named after the first Minister of Economic Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany and , later, Chancellor Ludwig Erhard . Erhard is considered the " father" of the social market economy and the economic boom after the Second World War.
It was built in 1994-1997 by the British architect Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners Team London / Berlin and inaugurated in 1998. A total of 15 elliptical arcs form the basic structure of the building, with a column-free ground floor.
It hosts the Berlin Chamber of Commerce and other important institutions of the regional economy including capital marketing and business development agencies.
